A high submission rate is vital if we are to maintain a tight calving pattern. We aim to serve over 90% of cows in 21 days. New Zealand "detail" tail paint is used to help detect estrous. When a cow is mounted the paint will be rubbed off. This paint comes in four colours (red, green, blue and yellow) which are used to indicate the fertility status of the cows. Our fertility program is as follows: 33 Days before the start of service all cows are painted with red tail paint. As cows are seen in heat they are repainted with green tail paint. 12 Days before the start of service all cows not seen in heat are examined by the vet and synchronised to come into heat. Once service commences cows are painted blue as they are served. Cows who repeat are painted yellow |

Until two years ago I was using fairly high genetic merit Holstein sires from Holland and North America. These sires are bred for a far more high input system than I intend to run and to use a Belfast saying "Even the dogs on the street" know that the Holstein has an increasing aversion to getting in calf in 365 days. Fertile cows are essential if my new system is going to work. For the last two years I have been using New Zealand Friesian sires. These are proven on a grass based system very similar to the one I am heading for. In New Zealand dairy semen is only used for six weeks thus ensuring infertility is not bred in. |
